Why can't we just kill off characters anymore?

Has anyone else noticed that in recent years it feels like lots of franchise films specifically seemingly kill of characters, just to bring them back in the next scene? They did this in Rise of Skywalker, Kenobi, Book of Boba Fett, any new Marvel movie...

I'm sure I'm missing a bunch, but it feels like this happens every time I see a new movie.

I'm starting to get used to the idea of characters staying alive after they die. It'll be a genuine surprise next time a movie actually kills of a character.
