There are plenty of sequels that people consider "better" than the first movie in the series, but which sequels completely overshadow the first films? I am talking about when you bring up the franchise and people immediately start talking about a sequel vs the first film. An examples for refrence:
T2: Judgement Day - I think I have never brought up The Terminator and people not start referencing the second movie. All the major moments, quotes and images come from the second movie. "Come with me if you want to live" was originally said by Kyle Reese in the first movie but Arnold owns the line in the sequel. 1984 Terminator is a great movie, but it has wholly and completely been overshadowed by the sequel.
Edit: a lot of people are taking this as “which sequel was better” which is a discussion to be had but Empire doesn’t make people completely not even talk about A New Hope. Toy Story 2 & 3 might be better or you might like them more but Toy Story still gets it’s fair share of love. So far The Road Warrior has been the best answer I have seen added because so many people don’t even think about Mad Max as being a movie, or watched Road Warrior first because it had a wider release.
