Political and social satire at its finest. A darkly humorous depiction of an apocalyptic scenario handled poorly by the government and responded to even worse by the people of Earth. Adam McKay tells it how it is, plain and simple. It is a sobering feeling, when I was mid-way through the movie, having registered the fact that McKay is commenting on the coronavirus pandemic and the Trump administrations hugely gross mishandling of the situation. As well as conspiracy culture and denial. I won’t ramble, but I will say that the song lyrics sung by Ariana Grande in the film really stuck with me:
“Look up, what he's really trying to say
Is get your head out of your ass
Listen to the goddamn qualified scientists
We really fucked it up, fucked it up this time”
