Low budget movies which are exceptional at what they do

What are some relatively low budget movies which absolutely blow blockbuster-budget films of the same genre/kind out of the water?

e.g. Threads (1982) - British film about nuclear war in Sheffield. Fairly cheap, 400,000$ ish but possibly the most upsetting, disturbing, terrifying portrayals of nuclear war ever. In other words, this movie is going to make you ill for at least a week after viewing. Much more intense than other nuclear war films like Terminator (except Terminator 2's portrayal of nukes)
