Realizations about characters that you had as an adult?

My husband and I were talking tonight about how when we were younger, neither of us realized that Jenny in Forrest Gump died of AIDS. Her childhood abuse also went over our heads. We were trying to remember other movies in which our younger selves didn't recognize certain adult situations. Excluding innuendo in Disney movies, what are some of those lightbulb moments for you? Edit: I stand corrected. It was Hepatitis C.
