Why do people keep saying “They don’t make movies like this anymore.” Is this even true?

I hear the phrase “they don’t make movies like this anymore,” a lot. I am assuming that means that movies aren’t good in this now anymore. That before, movies were so great and there were many classics.

Now, I am just beginning to get into movies. I haven’t seen much of these yet, but I am aware that there are many classics before now (70s, 80s movies etc).

However, I hear a lot of praise for the movies this year. Such as Uncut Gems, The Irishman, The Lighthouse, Marriage Story, some more too. It feels like it contradicts this statement.

But maybe it’s a problem with mainstream movies? I know lots of people who are into movies don’t like marvel or franchises (I don’t hate them or love them). But why are some people ignoring the other movies that come out in 2019 and they (not trying to accuse) are focusing on the mainstream movie. I imagine that there are these “no-so-great” movies back then too.

Maybe I’m misunderstanding this saying?
