Fellow cinephiles, I have compiled a list of handpicked great movies from my country. I want to share them with whole world. Share your country's best as well.
Some handpicked Indian movies :
Before I begin with the list, 2 things:
Movies are made in India in over 30 languages and this list is predominantly Hindi. Yeah. So, this isn't all there is to Indian cinema. Other Indians may list movies in their languages as well. I want to see them too.
This list reflects my personal tastes as well. Mostly dramas with varying amounts of violence. There's no comedy, romance or action movies in here. Also, there's nothing over the top or cringey in these movies as you will expect from "Bollywood". So, welcome.
***********************.
Haider 2014
Dir. Vishal Bhardwaj
Indian contemporary adaptation of Shakespeare's Hamlet set in midst of chaos in Kashmir (border and land dispute among India and Pakistan)
***********************.
If you enjoyed the first one, try Maqbool 2003 (Macbeth) and Omkara 2006 (Othello) of same director.
***********************.
Gangs of Wasseypur 2012
Dir. Anurag Kashyap
A 5 hour long Shakespearean Gangster saga about vengeance and death.
***********************.
Subramaniapuram 2008
Dir. M. Sasikumar
A violent opus. This movie inspired the 3rd one. Director of 3rd considers it best movie India ever made.
***********************.
Paan Singh Tomar 2012
Dir. Tigmanshu Dhulia
Real Life Story of how indifference shown to a olympian sportsperson turns him into a rebel against the world.
***********************.
Sonchiriya 2019
Dir. Abhishek Chaubey
Take the tragedy in 5th movie and imagine entire villages and communities suffering such indifference. This movie explores how then those people survive in similar barren valleys as bandits.
***********************.
Raman Raghav 2.0 (Or Psycho Raman) 2016
Dir. Anurag Kashyap
Ok, imagine love story of a paychotic serial killer and a druggie policeman. Yup. Makes no sense to me either.
***********************.
Ugly 2014
Dir. Anurag Kashyap
As name suggests, this movie is just ugly in how it depicts ugly side of humans. Dont watch this if you have any hope for humanity left at all.
***********************.
If by this point you're in love with everything Anurag Kashyap makes, try No Smoking 2007, Black Friday 2007 and Gulaal 2009.
***********************.
Manichitrathazu 1993
Dir. Fazil
This movie is so fucking good it's ridiculous. Its been 27 years, still the movie is played every month on TV and gets maximum TRPs. It has been remade 4 times in different languages never matching upto original. Yup, that's all I'm gonna say about this.
